What is the ID NOW COVID-19 TEST?

The ID NOW COVID-19 test is a diagnostic test that uses a respiratory sample obtained from a nasal swab to detect the presence of RNA from SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. A positive test result indicates that one is likely actively infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus (has COVID-19) and is presumed to be contagious.

How is the ID NOW COVID-19 test different than the COVID-19 Antibody Test?

Compared to an antibody test which indicates that one was exposed to the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the past and developed some degree of an immune response by detecting antibodies to the virus such as IgM or IgG, the ID NOW COVID-19 test allows us to diagnose an active COVID-19 infection by detecting genetic material from the virus itself.

Can the ID NOW COVID-19 Test tell me if I currently have the Coronavirus?

This test is one of three available diagnostic tools that can help determine whether you are currently infected with COVID-19. Your medical provider will use these test results, along with clinical observations and epidemiological data to make a final diagnosis.

Does the negative test result mean I am not infected with the Coronavirus?

A negative test result means that there was no RNA from SARS-CoV-2 detected in the sample collected which likely indicates that you do not have COVID-19. Based on your history and your symptoms, if you have any, your medical provider will use these test results to make a final diagnosis.

Can I take this test if I do not have any symptoms of COVID-19?

Your medical provider will help you determine if you are a good candidate for this test based on:

  • Signs or symptoms that you may be having (cough, shortness of breath, fever, chills, headache, body aches, sore throat or new loss of taste or smell)
  • If you live in or have recently traveled to a place where transmission of COVID-19 is known to occur.
  • If you have been in close contact with an individual suspected of or confirmed to have COVID-19.
